The George Washington Quarter
When Roscoe Bartlett was born, the coins in his father's pocket included the Standing Liberty Quarter, the Indian Head nickel, and the Mercury dime. Only the Lincoln penny might have looked familiar, and it was a "wheatie". When Roscoe turned 5, the old quarter was replaced by one bearing the bust of George Washington, marking only the second time the image of a former President had appeared on a US coin. The design remained unchanged until the bicentennial coins of 1976 and the current statehood series that began in 1999.
