Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created by Robert May when Roscoe Bartlett was 13 years old. May was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Dartmouth College who utilized his Ivy League education to become a store clerk at Montgomery Ward. In the course of his employment, he wrote a poem called Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer which the store handed out during the Christmas shopping season. Because he was an employee, Montgomery Ward maintained the copyright to Rudolph, and refused to give it up to May until 1947. The song based upon May's poem was written by May's brother-in-law 2 years later. The recording By Gene Autry reached No. 1 on BillBoard's Best Sellers chart. May died 32 years ago.
