American Gothic

"American Gothic" looks like an old painting. And well, it is an old painting having been painted in 1930, but it looks even older than that. Grant Wood wanted to paint something like 19th century Americana, and so he studied photography from the previous century. He found the house in Eldon, Iowa. It is built in the style of Carpenter Gothic, thus the "Gothic". He dressed his sister up in a colonial print apron, and posed his dentist with an old pitchfork. He painted them separately; his sister, Nan, never posed with Dr. McKeeby, and neither one of them ever stood in front of the house.

As the painting grew in popularity, Nan became distressed that people thought she was married to a man twice her age, and so she told people it was a painting of a farmer and his daughter. Take a second look at this painting. Is that what you would have complained about?
