Babe Ruth's 60th Home Run
On September 30, 1927, Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run of the season, and set perhaps the most iconic record in all of sport. The Babe still owns the Major League records for most total bases in a season (457), most extra base hits in a season (119) most times on base in a season (379), and best career slugging percentage (.690), but none of those records has matched the notoriety of his 60 home runs. Roger Maris broke the record 34 years later, but all he earned was an asterisk because his season was eight games longer. Since then, the record has been broken by Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds, all of whom have had to deal with allegations of performance enhancing drugs.
Off the field, the babe was famous for generously donating his time and money to charities, and for lavishing his affections on women other than his wife. Ruth had two daughters. One, Dorothy, was born to a mistress, but adopted by the Babe and his wife. Another, Julia was born to a different mistress, whom the Babe married the same year his first wife passed away.
Babe Ruth died of cancer 60 years ago.
